The Lockheed P-3 Orion airtanker has the highest historical “Availability Rate” in the industry and is 99.6%.  This means that when the call comes in, the P-3 is ready to fight fire 99.6% of the time.  The P-3 is unique in that it carries with it all of the critical spares and tools required for routine maintenance in aerial firefighting missions.  No chase/service truck is required.  This saves time and money for the customer as these added expenses are not built into its flight and availability rates.  It also eliminates the problems and delays inherent in relocation from base to base.  While the P-3 can fly at 300MPH+, land based service vehicles are subject to highway speed limits.
